Principles of Goal Setting for Students



  Goal Setting


       a)   Goals are the things you want to achieve in life, towards which you direct your efforts and determine your success in life.
       b)  Goal setting is the process of determining what “goal” one wants to achieve. The goal you set depends largely on your values (i.e. what you consider to be important).

Types of Goals
       a.   Short term goals
these goals to be achieved in a short period of time such as within days, weeks or a few months. For example, a student may want to improve his/her grades in the terminal examination.

      b.   Long term goals
these are goals to be achieved over a longer period of time (several months, years or over a life time) for example to become a university graduate. Sometimes achieving your short term is a means of fulfilling your long term goal. For example, for a student to become a university graduate, the short term goal of passing his/her assignments and examinations will be necessary.

Steps in setting achieving goals

a.   Clarify  your underlying motivation
b.   Identify your options(considering possible alternatives)
c.   Make a choice
d.   Set a reasonable time limit
e.   Work consistently towards achieving your set goal
f.    Check progress routinely
Importance of goal setting:

a.   Setting serves as a guide that helps you make decisions about, what you want to do and how to go about achieving it.
b.   It gives meaning and direction to your activities
c.   It increases your chances of successfully achieving your ambitions
d.    It enables you to prepare and plan appropriately

Problems that make the achievement of goals difficult

a.   Truancy in school
b.   Dropping out school is a major stumbling block to a student with career goals
c.   Pre marital sex
d.   Becoming a father or mother too early

Steps to achieving your career goal

a.   High school education
b.   Good academic performance
c.   Graduation
d.   Getting a job
e.   Promotion

Emphatically, setting goals depends on the values you hold and it helps you work towards achieving your ambitions. Although there might be a lot of hurdles to overcome, with determination you can always achieve your goal.
